James “Jim” Anton, is an American bass guitarist,producer and educator who has toured and/or recorded with such artists as Beat the Clock,CTB,Eight Head, Dean Magraw,Greazy Meal,Steve Tibbetts, Bradley Joseph, Jesse Johnson, Willie Wisely, Choying Drolma, Peter Ostroushko, Mandy Moore, John Gorka, Joey McIntyre, Delta Goodrem, Glen Phillips, Jonny Lang and Cory Wong. He has also performed with Grammy winner slide guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

Improv with Soundwalks

For the opening event of 2020 Sound / Simulacra will present Improv with Soundwalks. John C.S. Keston and Cody McKinney will be improvising with recently recorded soundwalks of urban and natural environments. Using a multiple channel sound system, the artists will experiment with electronics to craft soundscapes that compliment and contrast the unaltered found-sound that they captured. Jesse Whitney Recordings

For the final Sound / Simulacra of the 2019 program we presented Jesse Whitney, Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Jesse started the evening by performing a solo modular synthesizer set. Between sets Jesse repatched his setup to sample and process the signals from John C.S. Keston (Rhodes, piano, synthesizers), and Cody McKinney (bass, voice, electronics).

Tasha Baron Recordings

On October 23rd, 2019 Sound / Simulacra featured multi-instrumentalist Tasha Baron at Jazz Central Studios, Minneapolis, MN. In the first set Tasha improvised two pieces playing piano, synthesizers sounds, and electronic percussion. The second set add Cody McKinney on bass / electronic and John Keston on Rhodes / Prophet REV2.

Erik Fratzke Recordings

On September 25, 2019 Sound / Simulacra presented bassist, guitarist, and composer Erik Fratzke. Erik started off the evening with a fascinating series of bass improvisations along with samples from Hong Kong martial arts films, signal processing, and a bass duet with Cody McKinney. For the second set we performed two trio pieces.

On September 25, 2019 Sound / Simulacra is pleased to present bassist, guitarist, and composer Erik Fratzke at Jazz Central Studios, Minneapolis, MN. Music starts at 8:30pm.

Erik Fratzke is a composer/performer/educator based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Best known for his work as the bassist of Happy Apple, he also plays bass in Craig Taborn’s Junk Magic, and Cory Healey’s Beautiful Sunshine Band. As a guitarist, Erik is a member of The Dave King Trucking Company, Scott Miller’s Fifth Column Ensemble, The Gang Font, as well as the leader of the instrumental rock group Zebulon Pike. His compositions have been performed and recorded by the new music group Zeitgeist. Erik has performed/recorded with Tim Berne, Michel Portal, Rhys Chatham, Airto, Benoit Delbec, and Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins).

Darwin Grosse Recordings

Sound / Simulacra featured electronic music artist Darwin Grosse on May 22, 2019. These recordings include a wonderful solo set followed by three trio pieces based on graphic scores by Darwin. These graphic scores were beautifully printed on  laminated postcards as shown in the images below.

Liz Draper Recordings

Sound / Simulacra featured acoustic bassist Liz Draper at Jazz Central Studios on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. Draper started the evening by playing three exquisite solo upright bass pieces utilizing looping, field recordings, and extended technique. Keston and McKinney joined Draper on the second set for two more pieces as a trio.
